NAC@ ARS ELECTRONICA

"NAC - Neo Art Connect is exhibiting at the Ars Electronica festival. NAC is the first annual art and science event in Romania, a national network aiming to develop a cultural and research platform. It was created by Galeria Galateca and the NEOART Cultural Association in 2022. Andreea Sandu and Anca Boeriu are the curators and heads of the board, with this year's edition themed 'Changing Environments.' This theme is also the curatorial and research focus of the Ars Electronica exhibition, explored through two interactive installations. The selected artists, Sebastian Comănescu and Marina Oprea, are the winners of the NAC - Neo Art Connect grants, second edition, '24."

Sebastian Comănescu
Thigmonastic specimen 001 A speculative prototype of a symbiotic organism grafted onto a log.

The interactive video project explores the subtleties of disconnection. The hybrid examines the perceived separation (by us) between nature and the artificial, a differentiation that often provides the comfort of a passive attitude towards the environment. Nature has become a "visitable" place, but only on the condition that one intentionally leaves the human-made environment.

While humanity remains confined within the bounds of its individualistic pursuits and ignores the subtle mechanisms that govern ecological order, mycelium stands as an emanation of silent tenacity, adapted to the most inhospitable manifestations of human excess. From the ruins of consumerist culture and the traumas of ecological degradation, mycelial networks thrive, weaving their delicate filaments among the detritus of human industry.

The Architecture and Design Section at NAC 2024: Reflecting the Quality of Romanian Architecture

As part of the NAC 2024 Art and Science Annual, the Architecture Section showcased over 50 remarkable projects selected under the theme "Changing Environments/Changing Mentalities." These projects reflect the excellence and innovation of contemporary Romanian architecture, highlighting how the built environment responds to current societal and technological transformations.

Organized and curated by UNITH2B Architects, Hildegard Brandl, and Anca Brandiburg, in partnership with the Order of Architects of Romania, Bucharest Branch, this section brings to the forefront the significant contributions of Romanian architects.

Within the NAC Annual, architecture and art stood side by side in a contemporary dialogue, exploring the intersections between these two fields and providing an integrated perspective on the changes in our environment and mentalities. This synergy offered the audience a profound and inspiring experience, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing current challenges.

Performance & Shows & Concerts in the NAC 2024 Program

Sunetele Subiectului Gostin SSG
Mircea Florian aka FloriMan and friends: Lucian Stan aka DJ Vasile, Dragoș Andriana aka electro_cutare, Cristian Stanciu aka Matze. SSG is a mixed reinterpretation of natural sounds involuntarily produced by a living subject. Several microphones are placed on the subject's body to capture the natural sounds of a human being, including the heart, visceral sounds, breathing, joint sounds, etc. It is an immediate journey into a sound world that we often ignore and are mostly unfamiliar with.

Concert Shelton(USA) & Andrei Bălan(RO).
Two passionate musicians of contemporary jazz and experimental-free improvised music from two different continents come together. Aram Shelton on saxophone and Andrei Bălan on prepared electric guitar with electronics. Style: free improvised music, live looping, experimental noise, contemporary jazz. Balanophone live on stage.

Polyphonic Bodies:

The proposed eco-performative installation explores the corporeal, sonic, and visual relationship between the human body and that of plants. Created by Alina Tofan and Teo Rădulescu, this piece explores the fusion between art, science, technology, research, and activism.

Among the highlights of this exhibition event were internationally acclaimed artists who were awarded at the prestigious Austrian festival Ars Electronica in 2023, such as Ayoung Kim and Julia Rommel; the presence of Klaus Obermaier, one of the leading experts and new media artists, a pioneer in the interaction between technologies and the performing arts, music, and installations; and a specially created installation for NAC 2024 by the creative studio RIZI using AI, which allows the audience to interact with five of the most intelligent female personalities in Romanian history, pioneers in their respective fields, named BRIGHT WOMEN ROUNDTABLE.

Unique works were exhibited from the Professor Engineer Dimitrie Leonida Technical Museum in Bucharest, the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu, and the Constanța Art Museum, alongside installations by important Romanian artists or art groups such as Kinema Ikon, Andrei Bodnar and Andrei Cozlac, Elena Adorian Aronoaie, Vlad Țenu, Mihai Zgondoiu, Alina Rizescu, Dan Adrian Ionescu, Dorin Cucicov, or sections curated by members of the NAC 2024 board, such as Horea Avram or Ana Negoiță, and partners like RCW Iași.

There were 15,000 square meters of art and science at the largest event of its kind, featuring over 100 artists and partners from 7 countries, interactive installations, innovative architecture, artworks created with AI, VR, immersive experiences, robots, performances, conferences, films, and live DJ sessions.

It is a pilot collaborative project curated by media artist Alexandru Patatics to create an interactive 'creative laboratory' in the exhibition space of the Dimitrie Leonida National Technical Museum, together with the artists involved in the program: Olimpiu Bandalac, Dragoș Andriana, Răzvan Neagoe, Micleușanu Mitoș, Cătălin Matei, Eliza Mureșan, and their guests: Elena Copuzeanu and Ștefan Dinu.

Their own performative actions and audiovisual installations will also include presentations or workshops by artists Alexandru Patatics, Olimpiu Bandalac, Dragoș Andriana, Răzvan Neagoe, Micleușanu Mitoș, Cătălin Matei, Eliza Mureșan, and their guests: Elena Copuzeanu and Ștefan Dinu.

Throughout the exhibition period of the pilot project "HuB Leonida: Live," the involved artists conducted their own performative actions and audiovisual installations, which included presentations or workshops open to public participation.

The actions of the pilot project "HuB Leonida: Live" were documented through continuous video streaming ("Live") of the space itself and the projects carried out within it. ︎︎︎ Find out how it was in the video above.

The first NAC exhibition features the five winning projects of the NAC Scholarships, 2nd edition, sponsored by BRD Group Societe Generale.

Sebastian Comănescu (Bucharest), project Thigmonastic Specimen 001
Dragoș Dogioiu ( Bucharest), project HUSK
Sânziana Gheorghe (Timișoara) project Silicon Souls: Mars Odyssey
Marina Oprea ( Bucharest) project Ourcelium
Elena Waldorf (Cluj – Napoca) project The Morbid Myth of Digital Dementia.

The curators of this event are Andreea Sandu and Anca Boeriu.

The winning projects were selected by the NAC jury consisting of Christl Baur, Chair, Director of the Ars Electronica Festival; Horea Avram, art historian and curator; Mihai Zgondoiu, artist and curator; Anca Boeriu, artist and professor at UNArte Bucharest; and Andreea Sandu, cultural manager, curator, and initiator of NAC. Over 130 applications inspired by this edition's theme, Changing Environments, were submitted for this edition.

The mentoring program and project development took place from February to March 2024.

“Changing Environments is the chosen theme for NAC 2024, the second edition, and it creates a space for debate from the artistic perspective of creators who integrate, use, or collaborate with various other fields, sciences, and new technologies. It addresses the impact we feel on an individual, socio-economic, and cultural level due to the major changes in contemporary society, caused, on one hand, by the development of technology and new artificial intelligences present in most aspects of life, but also by climate and environmental changes, along with those created by armed conflicts in areas near our country,” state Andreea Sandu and Anca Boeriu.

CONGRATULATIONS
TO THE NEW NACxBRD SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES

On February 15, the winners of the project call for the NACxBRD scholarships, NEO︎︎︎ART CONNECT 2nd edition, 2024, supported by BRD Groupe Société Générale, were announced. The five winners of the NACxBRD scholarships, each worth 1,000 euros, are:

Sebastian Comănescu

Thigmonastic Specimen 001
The work seeks to eliminate the distancing from the phenomenon of change by introducing an artificial pseudo-parasite onto this natural artifact. The environment is thus actively altered through a decisive act. The work brings to the forefront, through movement and sound, the seemingly invisible relationship we have with the other subsystems around us.

Dragoș Dogioiu

HUSK
Inspired by the revitalization of fauna and flora after human-made disasters, Husk presents a fragment of an ecosystem from a distant future.

Sânziana Gheorghe

Silicon Souls: Mars Odysse
The dialogue between the micro and macro structures of a work is achieved through the visual relationship between order and disorder. Regardless of the medium used, small abstract forms are contrasted with larger, often geometric shapes, thereby symbolizing the relationship between the micro and macrocosm. Consequently, the main structure is segmented into microstructures, which become independent entities caught between abstraction and personification.

Marina Oprea

Ourcelium
Instead of fearing technology, the work "Ourcelium" proposes a symbiosis with it, similar to how mycelium connects the vast network of the forest, where technology becomes hybrid and human, and humans become animal/plant.

Elena Waldorf

The Morbid Myth of Digital Dementia
The project proposes an artistic exploration of the phenomenon of "digital dementia," a state of detachment experienced by individuals due to excessive use of technology. This concept refers to how people can become absorbed in digital content, losing touch with reality and their cognitive abilities.

The mentoring program and project development will take place from February to March 2024, with the works to be exhibited starting on May 10 at the GALATECA Gallery in Bucharest, as a preview for the NAC 2024 Annual, second edition.

Congratulations once again to the five sch

The mission of this year's NAC jury, consisting of Christl Baur, Chair and Director of the Ars Electronica Festival, Horea Avram, art historian and curator, Mihai Zgondoiu, artist and curator, Anca Boeriu, artist and professor at UNART Bucharest, and Andreea Sandu, cultural manager and NAC initiator, was extremely challenging, as the more than 130 applications inspired by this edition's theme, Changing Environments, presented equally relevant ideas.

As a result, an additional 13 projects were selected by the jury to be promoted at the NEO ART CONNECT Annual.

ABOUT THE THEME OF THE 2nd EDITION

The chosen theme for the NAC 2024 Art and Science Annual, 2nd edition, is "Changing Environments." We selected this theme to create a space for debate from the artistic perspective of creators who integrate, use, or collaborate with various other fields, sciences, and new technologies.

Changing Environments explores the impact we experience individually and within socio-economic-cultural aspects due to the major changes in contemporary society. These changes are partly due to the development of technology and new artificial intelligences present in most aspects of life, as well as climate and environmental changes, along with those created by armed conflicts in areas near our country.
